ARAFURA Scottish Dancers
Fun, Fitness and Friendship
The ARAFURA Scottish Dancers have been dancing since 2006. We chose the Masonic Lodge Hall because it has a sprung wooden floor--great to dance on and kind to our legs and feet.
Scottish Country Dancing is the first step to a healthier lifestyle. It is brilliant fun and a solid workout. It’s great for your well-being, heart health, helps prevent osteoporosis, and the brain is being constantly challenged so it can also help keep dementia at bay.
It is non-competitive social dancing and should not be confused with Highland Dancing which is danced for competitions. Scottish Country Dancing can be danced in a longways set or a square set with a partner. We dance to stirring reels, jigs and haunting strathspeys. It is a great exercise for both mind and body.
The ARAFURA Dancers are lucky to have a certified Scottish Dance Teacher in Mara Dobrini. They are a happy group and love to try new formations. The group is happy to dance with all ages from 10 to 100!
The ARAFURA Dancers celebrate the patron saint of Scotland at their annual St Andrews Ceilidh on the last Saturday of November at the Masonic Hall. Bagpipes, haggis, and local musicians, not to mention the excellent calling of dances by Mara. It’s a fun night with sore feet and happy smiles!
We meet every Thursday from 6pm till 8pm. We start the year on the first Thursday after Australia Day. We finish in early December.
The cost is $10.00 for two hours.
